From analysis of the word " Preposition" it is found that combination of Pre+Position makes Preposition.  A Preposition is a word that comes before a noun,pronoun, gerund, phrase and clause and makes relation to other words in a sentence. Other words may be the Noun, Verb or Adjective.

👉 WHAT ARE THE KINDS OF PREPOSITIONS ?

Basically Prepositions are of three kinds. They are Preposition of Time, Preposition of Place and Preposition of Direction.
Lets understand all the above kinds of Prepositions with examples-






ILLUSTRATION OF DIFFERENT KINDS OF PREPOSITIONS AS BELOW-


👉 PREPOSITION OF TIME- in, on, at, before, after

Such prepositions always indicate the time when anything happens or takes place.




Examples- 
On- He is supposed to come on Sunday.( Before day)
On- He comes home on  Dusserah. ( Before Occasion)
Here ' on ' is a preposition as it links the verb- COME with SUNDAY.and tells the TIME of it.
Generally " ON " is used before DAY or OCCASION .


Example- 
In- He was born in February 2010. (Before Month)
In- He passed the exam in 2022. ( Before Year )
          Generally " IN" is used before MONTH or YEAR.in respect of indicating TIME.  

Example- 
At- The train arrives at 5.00pm. (Point of Time)
At- He left the place at night.  ( Before ' night' )



Example- 
Before- The train arrived at the station before time. 
Before- Come before evening. 

Example- 
After- The train arrived at the station after scheduled time.
After- He arrived at home after Sun set.


👉PREPOSITION OF PLACE- Under, Above, In, On, At- 
Such prepositions indicate PLACE or LOCATION of the Object written in the sentence.



common use of such Prepositions
BEFORE NOUN

1. The cat is sitting under the table.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- Under
Noun- Table

2. The duster is on the table.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- On
 Noun- Table

3. The fan is over my head.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- Over
 Noun- head


4. The ball is in the box.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- in
 Noun- box


5. He travelled by train.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- by
 Noun- train

BEFORE PRONOUN

1. Ashok sits with me in class
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- with(used before pronoun-'me') / in(used before noun- 'class')
 Pronoun- me / Noun- Class



2. Kanak lives at Haripur with her mother.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- at(used before noun-'Haripur')/ with(used before pronoun- 'her')
 Pronoun- her 



3. He is under our control.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- under(used before pronoun-'our')
 Pronoun- our 


4. He behaves with her politely.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- with(used before pronoun-'her')
 Pronoun- her 


5. Keep these clothes with you.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- with(used before pronoun-'you')
 Pronoun- you

BEFORE GERUND

1. He told the joke without laughing.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- without(used before gerund-'laughing')
 gerund-  laughing 


2. He is afraid of swimming.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- of(used before gerund-'swimming')
 gerund- swimming 


3. You are excited about watching the movie.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- about(used before gerund-'watching')
 gerund- watching 


4. She is good at cooking.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- at(used before gerund-'cooking')
 gerund- cooking 


5. He is interested in painting.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- in(used before gerund-'painting')
 gerund- painting 




common use of such Prepositions
BEFORE PHRASE

The common prepositions that comes before a phrase are- to, of, about, at, before, after, by, behind, during, for, from, in, over, under and with.

1. They drove the car to the lush green fields.

👉 Indicators-
Preposition- to(used before phrase-'the lush green fields')
 the phrase- the lush green fields

2. I am searching for my English book.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- for(used before phrase-'my English book')
 the phrase- my English book


3. Rajat is laughing at my boss.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- at(used before phrase-'my boss')
 the phrase- my boss



4. The kids were laughing at the joker.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- at(used before phrase-'the joker')
 the phrase- the joker



5. A girl with red hair reads in this college.
👉 Indicators-
Preposition- with(used before phrase-'red hair')
 the phrase- red hair

BEFORE CLAUSE
1. The book is about where the first lives were found.

👉  Indicators-
Preposition- about ( comes before the clause- 'where the first lives were found')
clause- where the first lives were found
