Yevgeny Yevtushenko was a famous Russian poet, novelist, essayist, dramatist, screen writer, publisher, actor, editor and director of several films. His full name is Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Gangnus. He changed his last name and added his mother's name as Yevtushenko. Thus he named himself as Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Yevtushenko. Now he is commonly known as Yevgeny Yevtushenko.
His Early Life- Yevtushenko was born in the Irkutsk region of Siberia in a small town called Zima on 18th July1933. He belonged to a peasant family of noble descent. His wife was of Ukrainian descent. They were exiled to Siberia for a peasant rebellion headed by Joseph. His paternal ancestors were German. They moved to Russian Empire in 1767. His grandfather, Rudolph Gangnus was a math teacher of Baltic German descent. Yevtushenko's father, Aleksandr Rudolfovich Gangnus was a geologist. His mother, Zinaida Ermolaevna Yevtushenko was also a geologist but later she became a singer. Yevtushenko accompanied his father on geological expeditions to Kazakhstan in 1948 and to Altai of Siberia in 1950. His parents were divorced when he was only 7 years old. He was reared up by his mother. After second world war Yevtushenko moved to Moscow and studied at the Gorky Institute of Literature from 1951 to 1954.
His Writings and Works- The young Yevtushenko wrote his first verses and humorous Chastushki while living in Zima, Siberia. By 10 years old he composed his first poem and 6 years later it was published in a sports journal. At 19 he published his first book of poems, "The Prospect of the Future." In 1952 he joined the Union of Soviet Writers after the publication of his first collection of poetry. His early poem, ' So Mnoyu Vot Chto Proiskhodit' (That's is what is happening to me) became a very popular song. In 1955 he wrote a poem on Soviet borders for being an obstacle to his life. In 1956 his first important publication came out. It was "Stantsiya Zima" means Zima Station. In 1957 he was expelled from the Literary Institute for " Individualism". He was banned from travelling. But his works gained wide range of popularity.
